17 cops, 45 bandits killed in 6 months –Police
Bandits killed 17 policemen in Edo between March and June, The Commissioner of Police in Edo, Mr Danlami Yar’adua , disclosed in Benin on Wednesday.
He told newsmen that 45 robbery suspects were killed between January and May, adding that 101 robbery suspects were arrested within the period.
Yar’adua said that 72 firearms, 4,180 ammunition, 124 AK47 magazines and three explosives were recovered within the period.
The commissioner also disclosed that some members of the robbery gang that killed the policemen had been arrested.
He said that one of the robbers, Ejike Okeke, confessed during interrogation that he was a member of the gang that killed 14 policemen in two separate robbery operations.
The commissioner said that nine persons had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the May 15 riot in South Ibie, in which three persons were killed, several wounded and 31 houses burnt.
He said three grenades, 50 AK 47 live ammunition, one locally-made bullet proof vest, four battle axes, and one box of charm were recovered from the two warring factions.
The commissioner further disclosed that 12 kidnappers and scores of suspects that specialised in sending text messages and threat letters to citizens had been arrested.
