5 construction workers crushed to death in Abuja
Five workers of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc were on Monday crushed to death in Abuja, the Federal Road Safety Commission has announced.
The Public Education Officer of the commission, Mr Samuel Obayemi, made the announcement in a statement.
Obayemi said a Peugeot 406 car with the registration number FY 35 ABC ran into the construction workers at Ministers’ Hill, Maitama, when its driver, Sani Abdullahi, lost control.
``An eyewitness, Mr Pius Okafor, an excavator at the construction site, said six Berger workers were laying blocks by the roadside when the accident occurred.
``He added that an ash Peugeot 406 vehicle, with registration number FY 35 ABC, suddenly ran into them and somersaulted, killing five instantly and leaving one seriously injured,’’ Obayemi said.
He said the information from the crash scene revealed that the driver was on phone while speeding, making it impossible for him to control the vehicle.
Obayemi said a team of FRSC rescue officers was sent to the scene to evacuate the vehicle, which somersaulted after hitting the construction workers.
"An ambulance belonging to Julius Berger conveyed the corpses to the Julius Berger Clinic at Life Camp while another ambulance belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) took the injured driver to a general hospital for treatment,’’ he said.
He urged motorists to eschew the practice of using mobile phone while driving and to contact FRSC emergency number 0700-22553772 in case of any road crash.
