Activities of sand evacuators at Challawa worry KNSG

KANO state acting governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo has solicited the cooperation of sand evacuators (sand sellers) at the Challawa River Bank for the successful operation of projects at the water schemes there.
The acting governor, made the call yesterday when he paid an unscheduled visit to inspect the ongoing construction of new water intake at No II Chalalwa River site.
Gwarzo observed that the activities of sand sellers have been some of the biggest problems causing diversion of raw water to other unwanted places, resulting in low flow of commodity in the various water intakes of the plants.
According to him, though provision of potable water and employment are some of the important areas of the present administration, there is however, the need to sort out any problem that could jeopardize the effort of government to ensure constant water supply in the state.
The acting governor who is also the commissioner of water resources, however, said government has no intention to stop anybody from getting his legitimate earnings, directing the engineers and water experts of the ministry to come-up with strategic plans toward tackling this problem.
The acting governor commended the communities around the area for their good understanding and support and urged them to continue enlightening others on the good intention of government towards providing potable water to the teeming populace.
Earlier in his brief remark, the supervisor of the project and director planning in the ministry of water resources, Engr. Sunusi Usman Dambatta had said the project was being executed in accordance with its specification and hoped to be completed soon.
The director, however, stressed the need for the state government to take urgent measures to address the problem of free-flow of raw water to the treatment plants to ensure constant water supply to the people of Kano.
Daily Triumph learnt that, if completed, the new water intake would increase the volume of raw water intake to most of the treatment plants at Challawa water scheme.
