AIG shocked over police killings
Mr Muhammad Yesufu, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), has expressed shock at the killing of five policemen on June 26 by armed robbers.
Yesufu, in charge of Zone X1, who expressed the shock on yesterday in Ibadan while addressing police personnel, during a familiarisation tour of commands in the zone, described the incident as very unfortunate.
Yesufu, however, observed that the five policemen, who were on night patrol, must have badly positioned themselves for the armed robbers to kill all of them.
While sympathising with their families, Yesufu advised policemen on patrol duty to properly position themselves and be on the alert so that they are not killed like a pack of cards.
According to him, the killing of the policemen is a total declaration of war by armed robbers on police personnel in the Oyo state.
``Now that armed robbers in the state had declared total war on you, it is now your turn, it is your duty to equally declare total war on them,’’ Yesufu said.
``While they (armed robbers) are acting illegally, you as police officers have the backing of the law to perform your duty and fight the armed robbers to a stand still.
`` Do not exhibit cowardice, make Oyo State very hot for them to reside in,’’ the AIG said.
He said that diligent officers would be rewarded while those caught with any acts of indiscipline, lawlessness and brutality of civilians would be severely dealt with.
Responding to a question, Yesufu told the police personnel that the wearing of bullet-proof vests could not shield them from being killed by robbers.
``Bullet proof can only protect your chest but not your head and stomach. It is only training, loyalty, commitment and dedication that can save you from criminals,’’ he said.
Yesufu accused some of the officers of not taking their jobs seriously, pointing out that that was why robbers could kill five policemen at a go. States in zone X1 are Oyo, Ondo and Osun.
