Akwa Ibom earmarks N1.69bn for primary healthcare under MDGs
Akwa Ibom state government has earmarked N1.69 billion for primary healthcare and supply of medical equipment under its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) projects in 2010.
Mr Goddy Umoh, the Commissioner for Economic Development, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo.
Umoh said N847 million of the amounts came from 50 per cent contribution from the federal government under the MDGs Conditional Grant Scheme to states.
He said that within the next one week the state government would advertise for tenders in the 31 local government areas in the state.
He added: ``We will call for tenders for renovation or building of 31 primary health centres, one in each of the local government areas.
``We will also call for tenders for supply of medical equipment and drilling of motorised boreholes.’’
The commissioner explained that the state government was working toward the attainment of the MDGs target in healthcare delivery.
``In terms of child mortality in Akwa Ibom, we have declared free medical care for children between zero and five years.
``The state government also declared free medical treatment for pregnant women and those who are more than 60 years.
``We are pursuing the MDGs vigorously.’’
