Anichebe wins double Everton award
Everton’s Nigerian youngster Victor Anichebe won two ‘Young Player of the Season’ awards at the club's third annual End of Season Awards Gala on Wednesday.
Anichebe was voted as the Toffees’ best young player by fans of the club and also picked by the club shareholders for the ‘Shareholders Young Player Award’.
The 20-year-old won the award ahead of Leighton Baines, Jack Rodwell, Manuel Fernandes and James Vaughan, following a vote by users of evertonfc.com.
The awards cap a fine year for the starlet, who has enjoyed a rewarding run at both club and international level this season, scoring for the Nigerian Under-23 team on his debut.
"It was difficult going up on stage because the likes of Steven, Yak and Joseph were right at the front making me laugh," Anichebe told Everton TV as he went up for his first gong.
"Vaughany won it last year so I am delighted to follow him.
"I feel I have progressed this year but I'd like to progress even more."
"It's really satisfying. This award is voted for by the fans which makes it all the better. They have taken to me really well to be fair to them.
"Hopefully I can pay them back next season with some goals."
The striker will be hoping to strike gold with Nigeria in China later this year at the Olympic Games.
