Benue budgets N438m for sports
The Benue government has set aside N438 million for sports development in 2007,representing about 1.8 per cent of the state's N47.7-billion estimates for the year.
Governor George Akume disclosed this last Friday in Makurdi while presenting the state's 2007 appropriation bill to the state House of Assembly.
He said N200 million of the amount was allocated to Lobi Stars FC, while the purchase of sports equipment would gulp N70 million.
The governor said the construction of a multi-purpose indoor sports hall in Makurdi billed to cost N70 million and the completion of Makurdi Golf course estimated at N45 million.
The balance would be used to sponsor the states athletes tointernational competitions.
Akume assured that the money earmarked for sports development would be used judiciously as sports remained a veritable instrument for the enhancement of the state's image.
