NPC puts Nigeria's population at
140 million
The population of Nigeria is 140,003,542, the National
PopulationCommission (NPC) announced Friday in Abuja.
The latest figures is the result of the National Population and
Housing Census conducted in April.
The figures indicate that the population of males is 71,709,859,
while females are 68,293,683.
With a sex ratio of 105 to 100, the latest census figures
indicate an annual growth rate of 3.2 per cent.
Meanwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo at the weekend expressed
gratitude to the international community, especially the
European Union, for their contribution toward the success of
this year's National Population and Housing Census.
Speaking at the presentation of census figures at the State
House, Abuja, Obasanjo said the stakeholders had contributed
immensely toward the conclusion of the exercise.
``I believe that the way you have handled this exercise must
give most people joy and satisfaction,'' he said, adding that
there was reasonable transparency and confidentiality in its
handling.
``We can now say with reasonable certainty how many we are.
``The figure you have presented has not alarmed me because it is
still within the range of what we are planning,'' the president
added.
Presenting the report of the census to the president, the
Chairman, National Population Commission, Chief Samu'ila Makama,
said the country's total population is 140,003,542, made up of
71,709,859 males and 68,293,683 females.
Makama also said the country recorded an annual population
growth rate of 3.2 per cent with the ratio of 105 males to 100
females.
Makama said the figures were provisional until they were
approved by the National Council of State.
He said the final stages of the exercise were conducted with
utmost transparency and confidentiality, saying that the
presidency did not interfere in any way with the exercise.
