The population of Nigeria is 140,003,542, the National PopulationCommission (NPC) announced Friday in Abuja.
The latest figures is the result of the National Population and Housing Census conducted in April.
The figures indicate that the population of males is 71,709,859, while females are 68,293,683.
With a sex ratio of 105 to 100, the latest census figures indicate an annual growth rate of 3.2 per cent.
Meanwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo at the weekend expressed gratitude to the international community, especially the European Union, for their contribution toward the success of this year's National Population and Housing Census.
Speaking at the presentation of census figures at the State House, Abuja, Obasanjo said the stakeholders had contributed immensely toward the conclusion of the exercise.
``I believe that the way you have handled this exercise must give most people joy and satisfaction,'' he said, adding that there was reasonable transparency and confidentiality in its handling.
``We can now say with reasonable certainty how many we are.
``The figure you have presented has not alarmed me because it is still within the range of what we are planning,'' the president added.
Presenting the report of the census to the president, the Chairman, National Population Commission, Chief Samu'ila Makama, said the country's total population is 140,003,542, made up of 71,709,859 males and 68,293,683 females.
Makama also said the country recorded an annual population growth rate of 3.2 per cent with the ratio of 105 males to 100 females.
Makama said the figures were provisional until they were approved by the National Council of State.
He said the final stages of the exercise were conducted with utmost transparency and confidentiality, saying that the presidency did not interfere in any way with the exercise.
