Shekarau dissolves LG councils

Kano state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has dissolved all the 41 elected local government councils in the state with effect from Sunday 31st of December, 2006, to conform with the provision of Section 18(3) of the state Local Government Law.
The other three local government councils under control of the caretaker committees namely, Kiru, Madobi and Kabo councils were also dissolved with immediate effect.
According to a special announcement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Kano state Governor, Alhaji Sule Ya’u Sule, the governor has in line with the provision of Section 22(6) of the state local government law, directed all the Directors of Personnel Management (DPM) in all the 44 local governments to take charge of the affairs of the local government councils till further notice.
The announcement recalled that as a result of the elections into the local government councils held in March 2004, all the elected chairmen and councilors were sworn into office on April 1, 2004 for three years’ tenure.
It stated that the Section 18(3) of the Kano state local government law has provided that all the elected local government councils should be dissolved three months to the expiration of the three-year tenure hence the dissolution by their state governor.
