I ‘ll not contest for presidency,
says MRDD chairman
National chairman, Movement for Restoration and Defence of
Democracy (MRDD) Muhammadu Gambo says he has no plan to contest
the 2007 presidential election.
Gambo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja,
that his main priority as national chairman of MRDD was to
ensure the emergence of credible candidates not only in his own
party, but in all the registered political parties.
“I have not joined politics to seek for elective office but to
guide our politicians on how best they can practice democracy
and ensure the emergence of honest and credible leaders,’’ he
said.
MRDD will hold its national convention this week to select its
presidential candidate.
The MRDD, Gambo said was essentially formed to provide an
alternative platform for
politicians who were denied opportunity to offer themselves for
elections by other parties.
The former Inspector General of Police noted the lack of
internal democracy in many political parties, saying such was
capable of truncating the nation’s democracy.
He condemned the recent primary elections by other parties,
where he alleged, candidates were imposed against the wishes of
delegates and party members.
According to him, the MRDD would create a level playing ground
for all its aspirants, saying that only a candidate preferred by
delegates would emerged winner.
