NGE laments Agbroko’s killing
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) says it is saddened by the
killing last week in Lagos of one of its members, Mr Godwin
Agbroko, chairman, Editorial Board of ThisDay newspapers.
In a statement yesterday in Lagos, jointly signed by its
president and secretary, Messrs Baba Dantiye and John Ndukauba,
respectively, the NGE described Godwin Agbroko’s murder as a
loss to journalism
“The killing, by yet to be identified persons, brings to the
fore the daily hazards and dangers journalists face in
discharging their constitutional mandate of keeping the people
informed, entertained and educated.
“By his death, the community of editors and indeed journalism in
Nigeria has lost one of its articulate, focused, dedicated
practitioner and a vibrant columnist,” the statement said.
It urged the security agencies to undertake an in-depth and
thorough investigation into the killing of Agbroko and bring to
justice those behind this heinous act.
“It is only by bringing the killers to justice that media
practitioners will be assured of their safety, especially now
with the increased tempo of political activities leading to the
2007 elections.
“The nation’s democratic march will be the loser when
journalists are unable to undertake their assignments without
fear,” it added.
