Squatters may have been responsible for National Stadium fire -- Adamu
Dr Amos Adamu, Director of Sports Development in the Ministry of Sports and Social Development says the fire at the National Stadium, Lagos may have been caused by squatters/hoodlums living there.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an all night fire incident which reportedly started at around 9 p.m on Tuesday razed the Protocol and Public Relations offices at the stadium.
Adamu contended that since there was no power supply at the stadium, the fire could not be from circuit failure.
``I suspect the fire must have been caused by the too many hoodlums at the stadium. There are many of them (hoodlums) who live permanently here,'' he added.
``Now the ministry will have no option this time around but to ensure the complete stamping out of the hoodlums at the staduium,'' he added.
Dr Rafiu Oladipo, President General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club said Nigerians were lucky that the fire did no spread beyond the protocol office at the stadium.
Oladipo said that the ministry should thoroughly investgate the cause of the fire incident and find solution to it.
The Stadium Manager, Ahmed Jumare declined comments.
NAN reports that a fire service vehicle called in to assist to contain the inferno broke down in the process of fighting the fire.
It was gathered that the engine of the vehicle went dead and could nolonger pump out water, forcing the workers and the fire officers to scoop water spilling from the truck to continue to fight the blaze.
