79 doctors, nurses to lose jobs -- Chairman
Some of the 79 doctors and nurses employed four months ago at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State, are to lose their jobs.
The chairman of the hospital board, retired Col. Peter Ogah, gave the indication in Asaba on Saturday when he briefed newsmen on the employment crisis in the hospital.
Ogah explained that the affected staff were illegally employed at the instance of the former Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Greg Eboh.
He however, noted that if need be, the affected staff would be interviewed by the board, after which those found qualified would be retained.
Eboh and seven other medical personnel were sacked last October in connection with their alleged roles in the death of four patients.
The chairman stated that the board realised that there was the need to employ 79 medics, including 10 consultants, to reposition the hospital.
He added that ``the appointment letters of the illegally employed workers, were not signed by the Assistant Director (Administration), but the subordinate''.
Recently, the affected workers staged a protest alleging that some board members and management staff demanded bribes from them to have their jobs retained.
But at an interactive session with the workers last Friday in Asaba, the protesters, led by Dr Adayonfo Ehigiator, failed to identify those said to have demanded huge gratification from them.
