Channel resources to dams, Nanono
urges KNSG
By NASIRU MUHAMMAD
KANO state government has been called upon to channel resources
towards utilization of dams in the state for the enhancement of
agricultural production in the state.
The state chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN),
Alhaji Muhammad Sabo Nanono, mad the call at a press conference
with newsmen yesterday.
Alhaji Nanono noted that if that is done, farmers in the state
will be able to farm three times a year and could not have to
wait for the rain water.
He also called on the government to revamp Kano State
Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) which, according to him, is
the state’s major source of fertilizer production, adding that
enhancing the company’s production will help reduce
over-dependence on import of the commodity from outside the
country.
According to him, the association had recorded a number of
successes teraction with various non-governmental bodies such as
the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA),
Sassakawa Global 2000 (SSG), the Market and KKM Project among
others.
He said the institutions are very important citing the Sassakawa
Global 2000 which, he said, has been a major proponent of
agricultural production in the state.
The AFAN chairman disclosed that the organization does not sale,
import or give out seeds for free, but guides farmers where to
procure good seeds and how to produce, something he said has
substantially improved the production of maize in Kano.
Alhaji Nanono maintained that AFAN has as one of its
achievements, registration of commodity associations, stating
that previously most of such associations in the state just
exited by name but today they have about 24 registered commodity
associations.
He explained that such associations cut across all kinds of
agricultural activities, ranging from livestock to maize and
rice production, saying that AFAN is working closely with the
farmers, both in terms of information dissemination, guidance
and organizing them for policy advocacy.
Alhaji Nanono promised to implement the constitution of AFAN
that was approved some few months back and go for election of
new members this year like their counterparts elsewhere around
the country.
