Katsina govt warns on bird flu
The Katsina state ministry of agriculture has advised poultry farmers to take appropriate pre-emptive measures against any possibility of another outbreak of bird flu in the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Ali Hussaini, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Katsina that the advice was necessary to ensure the state was not caught unawares.
He said following the federal government warning, the ministry had already mobilised its standing committee on bird flu against the disease.
The committee, he said, would visit poultry farms in the state to enlighten the farmers on precautionary measures to take.
Hussaini said a media sensitisation campaign was also being carried out to alert poultry farmers on the issue.
He said the campaign was to ensure farmers reported any suspected case to the nearest veterinary clinic.
The clinics, he added, were located in all the six senatorial zones of the state.
The commissioner, however, said that no outbreak of the disease had been reported so far, stressing that every measure would be taken to contain any suspected case.
Six large poultry farms were destroyed last year in the state following the bird flu outbreak.
