Bird flu resurfaces in Katsina

BIRD flu disease has resurfaced in Katsina state in two poultry
farms in the state and already about 1,075 chickens affected by
the disease were culled after the outcome of the laboratory test
which confirmed that they were infected.
Similarly, officials of the committee on bird flu in the state
are currently conducting another laboratory test in one of the
poultry farms where the birds have been suspected to have
contracted the avian influenza.
Our correspondent reports that Katsina state last year lost
several chickens as a result of the outbreak of the disease.
Daily Triumph correspondent learnt that in an effort to arrest
the spread of the disease, the state government has embarked on
enlightenment campaign owners of poultry farms and sentitizing
them on how to prevent it.
Also, the Poultry Farmers Association in the state yesterday
summoned an emergency meeting and briefed its members on the
resurfacing of the disease.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the meeting, chairman of the
association, Alhaji Kabir Faskari said, 1,000 chickens were
culled in a poultry farm belonging to one Alhaji Isiyaku Aliyu
while 75 chickens were also culled at another poultry farm
located at Batagarawa area.
Alhaji Faskari however commended the state government and
members of the bird flu committee for taking urgent action to
arrest the spread of the disease.
All efforts to get details over the outbreak of the disease from
the state ministry of agriculture has failed.
However, dependable sources informed our correspondent that the
ministry is aware of the resurfacing of the disease.
