Gov Shekarau urged to dualise
Sani Mainagge-Gwarzo road
Kano state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has been called
upon to prevail on the federal government to dualise the
Sani-Mainagge-Gwarzo-BUK new site highway to reduce the rate of
accidents on that highway.
The chairman of the Dorayi Babba motor park branch of the
National Union of Road Transport Workers on Gwarzo road, Alhaji
Murtala Ahmad Dutse, who made the call in an interview with the
Daily Triumph’s reporter said, hardly a day passes without an
accident being recorded on the highway.
Alhaji Murtala Ahmad Dutse, stated that those mostly affected by
these accidents are women and children attempting to cross the
road due to the heavy traffic.
According to Alhaji Murtala Ahmad Dutse, the rate of accidents
on highways such as Yankaba-Hadejia road and Aminu Kano Way,
that have been dualised, have reduced considerably as women and
children find it very easy to cross these highways despite their
busy nature.
The chairman used the opportunity to commend members of his
branch for the careful manner they conducted themselves during
the just-concluded Eid-el-Kabir and New Year celebrations.
Alhaji Murtala Ahmad Dutse, announced that the branch did not
record any accident during those festivities and attributed this
situation to the various advice given to drivers on the need to
drive with caution at all times, adding that the members should
continue to maintain this noble ideal.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Mariri Taxi Long Journey branch
of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji
Abdullahi Dahiru, has appealed to the state governor to
investigate the mode of distribution and sale of petroleum
products both at the NNPC and the various filling stations.
Alhaji Abdullahi Dahiru, in an interview, alleged that most
filling stations in the state capital prefer to sell to black
marketers who buy the products in jerry cans instead of
motorists.
He stated that in other states of the federation, more priority
is given to motorists especially commercial drivers in filling
stations, adding that the present abnormality in the sale of
petrol in Kano state has not only led to increase in transport
fare, but has led to high cost of other essential items.
Alhaji Abdullahi Dahiru, announced that although no accident was
recorded by the branch during the Sallah and New Year
festivities, his members groaned and are still groaning under
the scarcity of petrol and urged the government to come to their
aid.
In another development, the Bus Two branch of the union at
Shahuchi motor park, has donated some lost and found unclaimed
items to the Shahuchi Destitute Home.
The items donated include wearing apparels, shoes, cooking
utensils and other household items.
Announcing this, the secretary of the branch, Comrade Kabiru
Hassan, said the donation which is a yearly event, is part of
the union’s gesture to alleviate the sufferings of the inmates
of the home as well as supplement the state government’s efforts
to cater for the inmates.
Receiving the items presented by an official of the union,
Comrade Labaran Ado, on behalf of the secretary, an official of
the Home, Alhaji Nuhu Abdullahi, thanked the union for the good
gesture and promised that the items will be judiciously
utilized.
The secretary of the branch, Comrade Kabiru Hassan commended the
members for promptly submitting lost and found items to the
branch office and appealed to them to keep up this honest
practice.
