DNCR produces 40m national
identity cards
The Directorate of National Civic Registration (DNCR), says it
now has a data base with 40 million biometrically validated
records of Nigerians.
Those are Nigerians of 18 years and above whose national
identity cards have since been produced, the DNCR Director, Mr
Wahab Jimoh told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).in Abuja.
He said that the 40 million identity cards were generated from
the 52 million applications recorded during the 2003 national
civic registration. Jimoh, an engineer, said that all identity
card applications had been fully processed at the DNCR's
production centre with 12 million of theapplications rejected.
The director explained that the rejection resulted from double
registration, under age registration, incomplete filling of
forms, bad or no finger printing records.
He said: ``Nobody outside has more than one record, and there is
no record anywhere that corresponds with another in the data
base.
``If you lose your national identity card and make a report, for
example, we will reproduce it from the data base.
``It is not like the national driver's licence renewal, where
you would be required to go for physical capturing again, if it
has to be reproduced.''
Jimoh said that of the 40 million cards already produced, 24
million had so far been distributed in 19 states and the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
``The cards have been distributed in Bayelsa, Yobe, Delta, Ogun,
Kwara, Benue, Lagos, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Sokoto, Edo, Kebbi, Ondo,
Kano, Katsina, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Plateau and Bauchi
states'', he said.
``We have 17 more states to go, and they are Kogi, Osun, Oyo,
Ekiti, Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Anambra, Jigawa, Taraba, Enugu,
Imo, Abia, Rivers, Borno, Gombe and Zamfara states,'' the
director said.
Jimoh said the cards distribution commencement in the remaining
states was dependent on availability of funds.
