Nigeria resolves international boundary disputes ---NBC
National Boundary Commission (NBC) Director General Sadiq Diggi says the country has resolved most of its international boundary disputes with the exception of the maritime boundary between it and Ghana.
Diggi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the weekend in Abuja that Nigeria was making concerted efforts to address the eight nautical miles between both countries.
``As at today, the eight nautical miles maritime boundary between Nigeria and Ghana is the only international boundary which has not been properly demarcated,'' he said.
He said that the NBC had initiated series of meetings with its Ghanaian counterparts on the issue.
Diggi, however, added that the response from Ghana had been poor as they failed to attend scheduled meetings aimed at resolving the issue.
He said that the commission had resolved and was now ready to permanently demarcate 20 out of the 85 inter-state boundary disputes in the country.
``We have initiated action on 75 inter-state boundary cases out of which 20 had been resolved, 13 are receiving attention while no action has been taken on 11 cases,'' he said.
He said that the commission was encouraged with the efforts by some states on the amicable demarcation of their boundaries without resorting to violence.
The director general urged state governments to strengthen their state and local government boundaries committees to ensure the speedy discharge of their mandates.
He said that such a development would enable the committees initiate interstate dialogues, which, he noted, would lead to peaceful and acceptable resolution of the disputes.
