Shekarau’s credibility, foresight
impressive, says ANPP Nat Sec
By MAJE T. SANUSI, Political Editor
THE All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) national secretary, Dr.
Sa’idu Umar Kumo, has given a pass mark to Kano state governor,
Malam Ibrahim Shekarau whom he also confirmed as the party’s
flagbearer for the state.
The national secretary was reacting to insinuations over last
gubernatorial primary election contest between the governor and
his deputy, Engr. Magaji Abdullahi, during a phone-in-programme
organized by Radio Kano on Saturday night.
Dr. Kumo commended Malam Shekarau’s credibility and foresight
for allowing his deputy to contest along side him, during the
primaries.
He said, no governor, in the history of Nigeria’s politics would
ever give room for his second-in-command to compete along with
him over the same seat, but Malam Shekarau had confidently
allowed that.
‘’In Kano not only the election was free and fair, but it was
also the most transparent conducted in the eyes of the public,
including the media, for the satisfaction of all,’’ he said.
According to the national secretary, what was more interesting
was that, room was given for the deputy governor to lodge his
complaint, after he (Magaji) was defeated at the polls.
Commenting on activities of TBO, Dr. Kumo confirmed its
disbandment, explaining that the action was as a result of
unanimous decision taken by the party’s executives, including
the presidential flagbearer, General Muhammadu Buhari.
He said the need for the ANPP to put its home in
order was necessary, now that 2007 elections are fast
approaching, hence, all campaign organisations, within the party
have been desserted to give more room for the ANPP to wax
stronger and to succeed in wrestling power from the PDP in 2007.
On the merger between the ANPP and the Action Congress, the
national secretary stressed that the alliance is still on
course.
He dismissed rumours that the alliance has flopped, explaining
that already a memorandum of understanding had been signed
between the executives of the two parties.
He also said, while they are waiting for the return of Vice
President Atiku Abubakar from vacation today, all procedures for
the merger have been completed, aimed at working together to
effectively actualize the objective.
