mobilises citizens to beat deadline
By UMAR DANLADI ADO
KANO state government has assured all eligible voters that they
will exercise their civic right in the on-going voter
revalidation as scheduled.
The chairman, Kano State Monitoring Committee on the Voters’
Revalidation exercise, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba, gave the assurance
at a joint meeting with the 44 local government sole
administrators at Government House, Kano yesterday.
Alhaji Garba, who is the state commissioner of information was
represented by the state commissioner of commerce and industry,
Alhaji Ahmad Ibrahim Yakasai.
The commissioner said the joint meeting was necessary in order
to assess, analyse and explore means of solving the problems
identified in some local government areas.
According to him, presently, a total of 2.8 million people have
been registered as against the over four million people
registered during the 1999 general elections.
Similarly, Alhaji Garba announced that the state government has
directed all its 44 local government councils to inaugurate
enlightenment committees in order to sensitise their eligible
voters with a view to ensuring full participation in the
exercise.
He further stated that the state government has been zoned into
three senatorial zones to facilitate easy voters’ revalidation
exercise.
The chairman, expressed dismay over the failure by some local
governments to inaugurate such monitoring committee in their
respective areas.
Alhaji Garba reaffirmed the government’s directive to the local
governments to comply in order to ensure that all eligible
voters are registered before January 31, which is the stipulated
date to end the exercise.
