Dangote textile workers cry for help
By SALISU BASO

DANGOTE textile workers have appealed to Hajiya Mariya Sunusi Dantata, mother of the owner of the company to come to their rescue as they have been denied their salaries and other allowances by the company two years ago.
The state secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the national assistant secretary of the Nigeria Textile Workers Union, Comrade Aminu Sulaiman made the appeal while briefing newsmen during a peaceful demonstration conducted by workers at the premises of the company in Kano.
He said since the temporary closure of the company two years ago, the workers have not been paid their salaries and allowances which put them into critical condition, and therefore urged Hajiya Mariya to intervene and help redress the situation.
Comrade Sulaiman said the workers have earlier planned to visit the Emir of Kano, Alhaji (Dr.) Ado Bayero, Kano state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and to Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s residence but for the intervention of the state police commissioner who prevailed them to desist from doing so in the interest of peace and stability of the state.
The secretary added that the company has entered an agreement with the workers union after the payment of their six months salary, promising to complete their remaining entitlements and reopen the company in two months time.
He, however, said all efforts to communicate with the company’s owner have failed while correspondence letters sent to the headquarters of the company in Lagos have not yet received attention.
He said the company, which was temporarily closed had kept workers awaiting for its reopening and therefore advised them to exercise patience.
