Nassarawa LG has 300 farmers --Sarkin Noma
UNLIKE the general belief that there are no much farmers in the metropolitan local government areas of Kano state, the Sarkin Noma of Nassarawa local government, one of such councils, Alhaji Muhammadu Yaro Sale, said they have about 300 farmer associations in the area.
Alhaji Sale, who is also the chairman of those associations, made the revelations while speaking with Daily Triumph correspondent in an exclusive interview over the weekend.
He said like many of his colleagues, his farmland is about six kilometers in size, stating that he plants sorghum, maize, millet, cowpea and other crops every year.
The Sarkin Noma explained that last year, he cultivated about 15 tons of groundnut, cowpea 30 tons and many more.
He then called on the state government to mandate the sole administrators of all the 44 local government areas of the state, to buy up the excess grains farmers produced in the last farming seasons, because doing so, will prevent some unscrupulous elements the chance of buying up the grains and horde it, something he said will lead to the price increase of the commodities.
“The purchase of the grains should be less than that obtainable at the open market, as that action (buying the grain) will encourage us, farmers, to produce more crops since we will be certain that we will not be running at a loss.”
He thanked the state government in its assistance to farmers in the areas of fertilizer supply, seeds, agro-chemicals and so on.
“I personally thank the farmer chairman of Nassarwa local government, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna for his assistance to farmers in various ways.”
