Gombe police commissioner assumes duty
From Aliyu Muhammad, Gombe

The newly-posted police commissioner in Gombe state, Joseph Ibbe, has assumed duty in earnest.
Briefing members of the press in his office, the commissioner said, the state police command will buckle up its belt so as to remain alert against any unforeseen circumtances, particularly at this time when the general election is around the corner.
He said political thuggery in whatever form, will not be tolerated by the command, saying that: “Anybobdy that offends the law, definatly the law will catch up with him.”
Fielding question from the newsmen, the commissioner further emphasized that the security of the state would be improved so as to make it more peaceful.
When asked on how to address the complaint of the opposition in terms of granting permission for either procession, rallies or meetings, the new police boss said: “All political parties in the state would be treated equally without any favouratism.”
He therefore, called on politians,” to play the game of politics according to the rule by avoiding voilence in totality”
Mr. Ibbe however, also cleared air on the allegation usually levelled against the police of being in romance with most state governments, by saying that working in closeness with the state government is neccessary, since he said, ‘’governors are the chief security custodians of their respective states while we are the low enforcement agents in these respective areas.’’
“I can not go away from the governor because he is the chief security custodian of the state, as a police, I must work with him to enforce law and order,” the commissiner explained.
On the issue of black market, the police boss said, ‘’If they operate in the neighbouring states, that does not mean we shall all break the law, by allowing these set of people banned by the federal government to come back to the streets,’’ he stressed.
“Do not forget, all that we do is being guided by the law, therefore, banning of black market is not the brain child of this command,” he emphasized.
He, however, appealled to the good people of Gombe state to remain calm and law abiding as well as sought for their co-operation by informing the police at an appropriate time for any crime committed.
