MMN guber candidate accuses INEC
of violating electoral act
From MUSTAPHA SAYE , Kaduna .
Against the on-going Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
verification and screening exercise of gubernatorial candidates,
the Kaduna state candidate of Mass Movement of Nigeria (MMN),
Engineer Musa Idris has expressed resentment on the screening
and disqualification of some candidates in the process.
Speaking to newsmen in Kaduna, Engineer Idris said, based on the
electoral law section 32(1, 2, 3, 4, 5), INEC does not have the
mandate to screen, but only verify candidates, while its current
exercise is even disqualifying some candidates, a negative
state-of-affairs which shows that something is very wrong, fishy
and an indication that, the electoral body that ought to be
unbiased is being used to stop popular candidates.
The MMN guber candidate then urged all stakeholders particularly
opposition parties executives and candidates to vehemently
oppose the process, since it is against the laid down laws of
electoral act.
In his words, “Only a court of law has the right to disqualify
candidate, not INEC whose mandate is only to verify candidates.
Therefore, opposition parties must challenge its screening and
disqualification sooner than later.”
On the issue of present perennial fuel scarcity across the
country, Idris accused Obasanjo administration of ripping off
the entire sector, in spite of its opportunity to repair the
nation’s four refineries and build new and modern ones in the
last seven years.
“What is amazing and even unbelievable is that, the Bush
administration in the United States of America has awarded
contract for establish 10 refineries in New Orleans State after
Katrina Wind storm had destroyed its refineries, and they have
already finished now. One can imagine the funds and opportunity
this PDP government got from inception to date, and yet our
refineries are not functioning to their maximum capacity, while
it is only one company that has been monopolizing the
importation of the refined products into the country. Is this
deregulation or monopoly? And besides, who owns the companies
that are importing the refined product?”
He then said Nigerians are tied of this Obasanjo PDP-led
government and will surely vote it out during the forthcoming
elections, despite their intention to rig, threaten and
intimidate people through the use of incumbency power.
“I am warning them that, it will not work this time around since
ordinary people that are subjected to abject poverty, squalor
and calpable insecurity of their lives and property will sure
vote and protect their votes at all cost”, he added.
