INEC disqualifies 4 candidates in Katsina

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Katsina state has disqualified four under-aged candidates, fielded by different political parties .
Similarly, the commission has so far cleared 296 candidates to contest for various elective positions in the 2007 elections.
In a statement issued to Daily Triumph INEC in the state and signed by the Public Relation Officer, Malam Lawan Sani, the commission said the disqualified candidates are those from Action Congress (AC), Democratic People’s Party, (DPP), APGA and PRP.
Giving the breakdown of the clearance, the statement said 27 are for Senate seat, 107 for House of Representatives and 162 for the state House of Assembly.
The statement however was silent on the number of candidates for gubernatorial seat in the state.
According to the statement, the screening exercise was carried out fairly, to ensure that all aspirants meet the required qualifications, as provided by the country’s constitution.
“The verification exercise was not meant to witch-hunt, blackmail or intimidate any political party or aspirants,” the statement concluded.
