LASG to enforce ``Okada riders
card'' Feb 27
The Lagos state government says it will begin to penalise
commercial motorcyclists, otherwise called ``Okada,'' who do not
have the rider's card from February 27.
Mr Segun Ogundeji, the Public Relations Officer, Ministry of
Transportation, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Tuesday
that the rider's card, initiated by the ministry was an
identification mark for every commercial motorcyclist.
``The card will help to track them anywhere and also help to
curb robbery operations through, because any operator who fails
to produce it on request will be apprehended,'' he added.
Ogundeji said the cards would be launched on February. 27, and
its enforcement would commence immediately.
He appealed to other non-commercial motorcylists yet to obtain
the cards to do so to avoid sanction.
Ogundeji reiterated that the government's ban on Okada operators
from operating between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. was still in force.
``The ban will continue to be in force because the government
cannot afford to compromise the security of the citizenry,'' he
added.
He, however, lamented that the ban was not as effective as
expected, because of the dearth of security personnel.
