LG donates generators, photocopiers to INEC for registration
Ado local government council in Benue has donated 10 power generating sets and 10 photocopy machines to INEC to facilitate voter registration in the area.
The items were to INEC officials today in Igumale, the headquarters of the council, the council's caretaker committee chairman, Mr Ekpe Ogbu.
Ekoe said the gesture was induced by the upsurge in the number of people coming out for registration in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that INEC registration centres across the state have recorded an unprecedented upsurge in the number of people struggling to get registered before the January. 31 deadline.
Ogbu, however, lamented that the items donated might not really be able to fulfil their purpose, as only 16, out of the 35 Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines deployed to the area, were functional.
He called for more DDC machines in the area to register the increasing number of people ``trooping out to participate in the exercise''.
He said that any further delay by INEC could be misconstrued to be a plot to wilfully disenfranchise the people in the coming elections.
Ogbu, however, reiterated that the council was prepared to further aid INEC in ensuring that people from the area were duly registered for the April elections.
