NPC sets up census tribunal
The National Population Commission (NPC) has established a Census Population Tribunal.
The commission's federal commissioner in Enugu state, Dr Sulaiman Bello, announced this Wednesday in Enugu during his farewell visit to Governor Chimaroke Nnamani.
He said the tribunal would address complaints on the recently released census figures.
He explained that the tribunal was in response to the numerous complaints trailing the result of the census.
Bello, who is leaving the state, described census as one of the most important projects in any nation, whether developed or developing, noting that no country would progress without a reliable population figure.
The commissioner expressed gratitude to the state government for the cooperation and support given him during the census.
He said he was leaving the state with mixed feelings ``because of the people’s hospitality and the cordial relationship that existed between my office and the state government''.
Responding, Nnamani stressed the need for the federal government to set up an investigative machinery to look into complaints raised by states and organisations on the result of the census.
Nnamani, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dan Shere, said it was a normal practice in a democratic government to listen and attend to public opinions to ensure equity and fairness to all.
He commended the outgoing federal commissioner for his outstanding performance while serving in the state and wished him God's guidance.
