Baroness Amos
speaks at NIIA today
LEADER of the British House of Lords, Baroness Valerie Amos,
will today be the Guest Speaker at the Oxford and Cambridge
Spring Lecture in Lagos.
Baroness Amos, according to a press release by Graeme Bannatyne,
press and public affairs, British High Commission, Abuja will
deliver a speech entitled “The Case for Helping Africa”.
The Oxford and Cambridge Spring Lecture is scheduled to begin by
1pm at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria
Island, the statement added.Baroness Valerie Amos was appointed
Leader of the House of Lords and Lord President of the Council
in October 2003. In addition to her duties as Leader of the
House and Lord President she also acts as spokesperson on
international development issues for the government in the House
of Lords.
Baroness Amos has previously been appointed Secretary of State
for International Development in May 2003, becoming the first
black female member of a British Cabinet. She has also been
Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth
Affairs, a position she held between June 2001 with
responsibility for Africa, the Commonwealth, the Caribbean,
Britain’s Overseas Territories, Consular Affairs and Personnel
Issues.
Baroness Amos will be the first woman to be invited to be guest
lecturer at the Oxford and Cambridge Spring Lecture.
Oxford and Cambridge Club of Nigeria was established in 1985 by
a group of Nigerian alumni from both Oxford and Cambridge
Universities in the UK.
