policy after retirement
By SALISU BASO
THE National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of
Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has introduced a new policy of succeeding the
vacant seat of factory worker after his retirement from service
by his family.
Senior assistant secretary of the union and the secretary
Nigeria Labour Congress, Kano state council, Comrade Aminu
Sulaiman disclosed this to Daily Triumph in his office.
He said already the state branch of the union has implemented
the new policy by signing agreement between the management of
the association of Spinners and Dyers and the union for the
replacement of 35 vacant seats of retired workers of the company
with their children.
Comrade Sulaiman added that the retired workers have been
directed to provide their replacement in the company and
therefore, commended the management of the company for the
cooperation and support accorded the policy.
He expressed the hope that the new policy would assist in
maintaining the existing relationship and respect between the
company and the workers.
He said the union would soon continue its mobilization campaign
on the new policy in order to enable the company emulate the
Spinners and Dyers company.
According to him, the union has also conducted similar programme
at the United Nigeria Textile Limited (UNITEX) and therefore
called on the manufacturers to consider the importance of the
new policy.
On the allegation that workers have contributed toward the
closure of the company especially in Northern states
particularly Kano, Comrade Sulaiman withdrew the statement,
adding that the company’s closure was as a result of the
government `s ineptitude in failing to provide sufficient
electricity to the factories on one hand and selfishness,
management as well as lack of qualified workers to man the
company on the other.
He therefore urged the manufacturers to always check the
activities of the companies management, because the
irresponsibility of the workers was the production and
administration, accountability or sales.
Also, the Senior Assistant Secretary commended the management
staff of the LELA Agro Sacks, Sharada for frustrating the
workers of the company to stage a protest against their wish to
form workers union, adding that the union had noticed that the
company owners had accepted the offer.
He then stressed the importance of the workers union as mediator
between the management and workers as well as the security that
will promote their understanding.
Comrade Sulaiman then appealed to consider the workers move as a
way of promoting peace and unity among the company, adding that
the union will assure equal rights are given to both the
manufacturers and the workers.
He then commended the state police commissioner for directing
the Sharada Divisional Police Officer to investigate and settle
the matter without bias.
Our crew who visited the company, observed that the personnel
manager who refused to give his name confirmed that the workers
protested, adding that the general manager of the company was in
