NUTGTWN introduces succession policy after retirement

THE National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has introduced a new policy of succeeding the vacant seat of factory worker after his retirement from service by his family.
Senior assistant secretary of the union and the secretary Nigeria Labour Congress, Kano state council, Comrade Aminu Sulaiman disclosed this to Daily Triumph in his office.
He said already the state branch of the union has implemented the new policy by signing agreement between the management of the association of Spinners and Dyers and the union for the replacement of 35 vacant seats of retired workers of the company with their children.
Comrade Sulaiman added that the retired workers have been directed to provide their replacement in the company and therefore, commended the management of the company for the cooperation and support accorded the policy.
He expressed the hope that the new policy would assist in maintaining the existing relationship and respect between the company and the workers.
He said the union would soon continue its mobilization campaign on the new policy in order to enable the company emulate the Spinners and Dyers company.
According to him, the union has also conducted similar programme at the United Nigeria Textile Limited (UNITEX) and therefore called on the manufacturers to consider the importance of the new policy.
On the allegation that workers have contributed toward the closure of the company especially in Northern states particularly Kano, Comrade Sulaiman withdrew the statement, adding that the company’s closure was as a result of the government `s ineptitude in failing to provide sufficient electricity to the factories on one hand and selfishness, management as well as lack of qualified workers to man the company on the other.
He therefore urged the manufacturers to always check the activities of the companies management, because the irresponsibility of the workers was the production and administration, accountability or sales.
Also, the Senior Assistant Secretary commended the management staff of the LELA Agro Sacks, Sharada for frustrating the workers of the company to stage a protest against their wish to form workers union, adding that the union had noticed that the company owners had accepted the offer.
He then stressed the importance of the workers union as mediator between the management and workers as well as the security that will promote their understanding.
Comrade Sulaiman then appealed to consider the workers move as a way of promoting peace and unity among the company, adding that the union will assure equal rights are given to both the manufacturers and the workers.
He then commended the state police commissioner for directing the Sharada Divisional Police Officer to investigate and settle the matter without bias.
Our crew who visited the company, observed that the personnel manager who refused to give his name confirmed that the workers protested, adding that the general manager of the company was in better position to speak to press.
