KTC win Shell Cup, N2m
*Naniya lauds players

KANO state commissioner of education, Dr. Tijjani Muhammad
Naniya has described the victory of Kano Teachers College (ktc)
football team in the just-concluded 9th edition of All Secondary
Schools football championship otherwise known as Shell Cup not
only to the state but to the entire Northern part of the
country.
He was speaking yesterday while welcoming the victorious team
from Abuja after they defeated their Asegun Comprehensive High
School, Ibadan counterparts 7-6 in a penalty shoot-out at the
National Stadium, Abuja on Sunday.
Dr. Naniya said that the team’s victory is another sign of
support and commitment of the present administration led by
Malam Ibrahim Shakarau towards the overall developmental
programmes of the state government.
According to him, the state government was not only happy with
the team’s victory but the way and manner the players conducted
themselves throughout the competition which showed the
significance of the state government’s A Daidaita Sahu
programme.
‘’We have been watching your movement right from the preliminary
stages in Kaduna, Niger and the venue of the final Abuja which
the team won the most disciplined team; this is very appreciable
to the government” he said.
He commended the players, officials as well as the head of
school sports of the state ministry of education for a job
well-done and charged them to sustain the tempo in future
national and international competitions.
The commissioner then said that his ministry will intimate the
state governor for a possible reception for the victorious team
within this week.
Speaking also, the principal of Kano Teachers College, Alhaji
Auwalu Ibrahim expessed satisfaction with the players’
commitment, zeal and dedication throughout the competition.
Meanwhile, the team won the competition with
six points, winning the first prize tag of N2.1 million and a
golden cup to boot.
Asegun Comprehensive High School, Ibadan won the second
position, and went home with N1 million and a sliver medal on
top.
The third position went to Ado Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti with a
prize tag of N250,000 and a bronze medal while Katsina
Government College came fourth, also winning N200,000.
Giving a breakdown of the prizes, the Managing Director of Shell
Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Mr Basil
Omiyi, said that N1.5 million of the money won by Kano would be
used for sports facilities, while each player would go home with
N15,000.
Meanwhile, Alao Tope from Ado Grammar
School bagged two prizes, namely the most valuable player and
the highest goal scorer for the competition.
The best goalkeeper prize went to Akinola Omoleye from Ado
Grammar School while the best midfielder prize went to Abubakar
Mamman from Katsina.
