Purge in police force: Sacked officers, men turn beggars...In Kebbi
Kebbi state police command has laid off 2,074 of its officers and men in line with on-going reorganisation in the police service.
Muhammad Kabir, the command’s public relations officer, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Birnin Kebbi, saying the letters were given to the affected staff on Friday.
He said the list was compiled last year, pointing out that the exercise was not peculiar to Kebbi but was nationwide.
Some of the affected staff who spoke to NAN expressed disappointment over the way and manner the exercise was being implemented, saying they had not money to transport their families to their homes.
They, therefore, called on the police authorities to effect the payments of their benefits, including the January salary to enable them solve some of their immediate problems.
NAN observed that some of the affected staff have now resulted to street begging for survival.
Kabir said the state police commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim Machi, would address the media on the matter in due course.
