Sokoto DPP legislators probe impeachment attempt
Twenty DPP members of the Sokoto Assembly have inaugurated a five-man committee to investigate the attempt in December by the nine ANPP members to impeach the Speaker.
The members took the decision at a sitting presided over by Speaker Lawalli Marghai, where Alhaji Abubakar Hamma'ali was appointed chairman of the committee.
The other terms of reference of the committee were to make recommendations, including sanctions, to forestall a recurrence of such incidents.
Marghai charged the committee to start work in earnest and submit its report as soon as possible.
Nine ANPP members, had on Dec. 29, announced the purported impeachment of Marghai declaring his seat and those of 19 other DPP members vacant.
They also reportedly appointed the deputy speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu, as the new Speaker and Alhaji Umar Hiliya, as his deputy.
Marghai, however, described the action of the ANPP lawmakers as ''unconstitutional, null and void''.
