NGO rewards FCT, says it is habitable
From BEN UKEJI, Abuja

INTERNATIONAL awards for Liveable Communities (LIVCOM) an Internatinal Non-Governmental organisation (NGO) based in England , United Kingdom has announced Abuja the Nigerian capital city as winner of the bursary award for the 2006 edition.
The competition which was held in Hangzhou, China saw Abuja coming tops ahead of 46 other cities of the world including England (UK), Rome and other reknown cities in the world.
The director, parks and recreation of Abuja Metropolitan Management Agency (MMA) Mr. Luka B,. Achi disclosed this to journalists recently in Abuja.
Achi said that the award came upon the submission successfully defining a financing assistance proposal on Herbal Garden for Lemon Grass.
He recallled that the organisers of the award has since sent to the city the sum of 20,000 Pounds equivalent to N5 million and a gold cup as a reward.
He explained that Livecom was excited with Nigeria over the presentation of such a project that is capable of improving the health condition of residents of the city.
Mr. Achi noted that the award in far away China, was a demonstruction of the Federal Capital Territory administration’s desire to make Abuja an apapropriate living city in the world. This shows that the minister El-Rufai ‘s efforts are not in vain”, he said.
The parks and recreation director added that the FCT administration is committed to making the parks within the city safe.
He revealed that plans are in top gear to provide Abuja with at least 30 parks with first class facilities, such as seats, and other amenities that would encourage residents to visit the parks.
The park’s boss however decried the attitude of some law enforcement officers who use the parks especially the Millenium Park for unlimited activities.
Achi hinted that the management has concluded arrangement to employ about 180 graduates to improve the services being rendered by the park currently.
