No going back on LASU closure -- NUC
The National Universities Commission (NUC) says its decision to close down the University of Lagos (LASU) is to check the ``flagrant abuse of standards'' at the institution.
NUC Executive Secretary Julius Okojie said in Abuja at a news conference that the university had also been barred from admitting students for the new academic session.
Okojie said the ban would only be lifted after the commission had completed its audit of the institution including its 61,000 students, lecture facilities and caliber of its staff.
``The system at LASU is bad, and we have a responsibility to protect the sanctity of certificates being issued to its graduates,'' the secretary said.
He said that most of the courses offered by the university were not accredited, while consultants were used to run courses from unsuitable locations.
Okojie warned that the commission would not succumb to blackmail on its decision, but that it was opened to dialogue at all times.
Okojie stated that the NUC would continue to monitor and appraise the performance of programmes run by universities in the country to ensure that they conformed with the minimum standards.
In that regard, he said that the total number of courses accredited in the 79 universities in the country had risen from 16.8 per cent in 1999 to 54.4 per cent in November 2006.
He said that the commission had begun a gradual shift from programmes accreditation to institutional accreditation in line with global trend in the education sector.
Okojie urged the media to assist the commission in exposing those operating illegal universities and study centers nationwide.
