Police acquire 30 armoured vehicles to fight crime
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Sunday Ehindero, said in Akure that the police had procured 30 armoured vehicles to combat crime in Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states.
He made the announcement at the inauguration of the joint task force and community policing project in Ondo state.
He said the measure was to ensure the security of police men deployed to the affected states.
Ehindero said the police would receive the vehicles before March next year.
He said the police had improved and performed better in the past two years, noting that some foreign countries had requested for assistance on training from the Nigeria police.
The policing system, he added, was being transformed from para-military policing to community policing.
Ehindero said community policing had commenced in two states and would be extended to 18 states within the next two months.
He announced that 51 policemen would soon go for training in community policing in Boston, U.S..
Gov. Olusegun Agagu said 22 Toyota Hilux vehicles purchased at N101.2 million, were provided for the joint task force operation by the state government.
He said the state also provided armoured vests, walkie-talkies, VHF base radio with power supply back-up worth N24.7 million.
The governor said the task force members were drawn from the state police command and the 323 artillery division of the Nigerian Army, Akure.
Others, he added, were also drawn from the State Security Service (SSS) to combat increasing wave of armed robbery and other crimes in the state.
