Workshop urges FG to create Nuclear, Radiological Emergency Fund
A national workshop on Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Planning, Preparedness and Response has ended with a call on the government to create a nuclear and radiological emergency fund.
A communiqué issued today in Abuja at the end of a workshop organised by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) said that such fund would enable the NNRA establish an Emergency Response Centre.
The communiqué also noted that the proposed fund would assist in the procurement of national emergency response equipment, training and provision of logistics for prompt response to a nuclear or radiological emergency.
The participants urged government to provide sufficient budgetary allocations to all ministries and parastatal agencies involved in response to nuclear or radiological emergency.
It noted that preparing for radiation emergencies was done in isolation without full involvement of the national or local organisations responsible for responding to conventional emergencies such as fire, flood and storms.
``Responses to emergencies have often been directed to so many different organisations and individuals resulting in confusion, conflicting information and instruction and ultimately in ineffective response and loss of public trust,'' the communiqué noted.
It stated that there was need to have an integrated nuclear and radiological emergency response system with responsibilities and authorities clearly assigned and coordinated.
It urged NNRA to collaborate with National Emergency Management Agency to develop strategies and guidance for emergency procedures.
