Obasanjo spoils Falcons
Impressed with Nigeria’s dominance in the female football in Africa, President Olusegun Obasanjo has splashed millions on the members of the victorious Super Falcons for their feat at the just concluded African Women Championship in Warri, Delta State, Nigeriansportsonline.com can report.
The five-time African champions are to receive one million naira ($7,800) each for winning the African Championship for a record fifth consecutive time.
President Olusegun Obasanjo announced the cash reward at a ceremony in the capital Abuja after he received the girls at the Aso Rock Villa alongside NFA chairman, Alhaji Sani Lulu.
The Super Falcons piped the Black Queens of Ghana 1-0 in the final in the southern Nigerian city of Warri last Saturday to clinch the title.
Nigeria and Ghana will represent Africa at the women's World Cup in China next year.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons have won every edition of the Women's Championship
Nigeria's Perpetua Nkwocha has welcomed President Olusegun Obasanjo's decision to award each winner of the African Women's Championship a cash bonus of US$8,000.
The Super Falcons won the tournament for a record fifth time last Sunday, and Obasanjo announced his awards on Thursday.
"It's a good thing to be rewarded by the president," Nkwocha told BBC Sport. "We just hope the rewards will be a continual thing."
Obasanjo's tenure as Nigerian president ends next May and forward Nkwocha, who scored the matchwinner in the 1-0 defeat of Ghana in the final, hopes the new regime will continue the bonuses.
"With this movitation, we can look forward to the World Cup with greater motivation."
By winning the competition in Delta State, south-western Nigeria, the hosts automatically qualify for next year's Women's World Cup in China.
They will be joined in the finals by runners-up Ghana.
Obasanjo hosted the Super Falcons with a breakfast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He used the occasion to commend the exploits of the Falcons whom he described as "my adoring daughters".
