530,000 children infected with HIV --- UNICEF

UNICEF said that an estimated 530,000 children under 15 were infected with HIV in 2006, mainly through mother-to-child transmission.
In its report on the state of children and HIV/AIDS, UNICEF said without treatment, 50 per cent of the infected infants would die before age two.
The report quoted UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman as urging national governments to urgently rally support and care for children suffering from the pandemic.

KTSG settles retirees’ benefits with N1bn

Katsina state government has spent over N1 billion for the settlement of pension and gratuity to retired civil servants, director administration and supply of the state establishment and training department, Alhaji Aliyu Galomi Girka has said.
Girka who spoke with newsmen in Katsina state explained that the amount was expended last year, reaffirming that out of the amount, N508 million was expended on pension while N500 million was expended on gratuity.

Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that he is ``the most vilified, humiliated, investigated and rubbished Vice President in the history of Nigeria''.
Atiku said he had remained loyal to his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo and did not deserve to be treated the way he was being treated.
This position is contained in a reply to a counter-affidavit filed by the federal government in a suit pending before the Court of Appeal.

Kano Pillars Football Club management has dragged Enyimba Football Club midfielder Benedict Atule and Sharks of Port-Harcourt, Musa Mohammed to the ancient Pyramid city of Kano in its resolve to fortify the team in the on-going Premier League.
Benedict Atule who played in the club between 2000 and 2003 before joining Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi from were he sojourned to Enyimba fc. He was dragged to Kano by the Alhaji Muhammad Tukur Babangida led management to negotiate with club for the 2007 season.
