Yar'adua describes children as Nigeria's greatest resources
The PDP presidential flag bearer, Alhaji Umaru Yar'adua, has described children as Nigeria's greatest resources who must be well educated.
Yar'adua, who is also the Katsina state governor, said this at the presentation of the school materials purchased by the state government to the State Universal Basic Education Board by the Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili.
He noted that since the nation's standard of education had drastically reduced, it was now imperative for all citizens to support the government in revamping the education sector.
"We must all ensure that our children are well educated to enable them to survive in the competitive global village," he said.
He lamented the decay in the education sector, stressing that purposeful education should aim at preparing the youths to live meaningful lives.
Yar'adua said that the state government had a roadmap for the pragmatic development of the youths through policies, such as provision of qualified teachers and sufficient teaching materials.
He particularly urged the teachers to show more commitment to the transformation of educational standards in the country.
Also speaking, Ezekwesili commended the state government for its determination to enhance the standard of education in the state.
She, however, advised the state government to strive harder, saying that challenges facing the sector were still enormous.
Ezekwesili also stressed the need for governments to encourage the students to enroll for science and technology courses.
