NACA urges government to create agencies on AIDS

THE executive chairman of National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin has appealed to state governments to create agencies to fight against HIV/AIDS to replace current committees.
He said creating agencies became necessary in view of serious nature of the disease and ensure permanent fight against it.
Prof. Osotimehin told Katsina state acting governor during a courtesy call in his office, that there is fear that the current committees may be dissolve by any government because they don’t have any legal backing like agencies.
The executive chairman explained that the fight against HIV/AIDS is a collective one, hence need the support of all Nigerians.
He, however, commended Katsina state government for taking measures to check increase in HIV/AIDS disease, which assisted in reducing cases of the disease in the state.
Responding, the acting governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba Aminchi said a meeting will hold with Ulamas in the state to assist in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Alhaji Aminchi further said the local government council chairmen will be directed to embark on vigorous campaign against the disease.
He promised that the state government will continue to assist both the national and state committees in the fight against the disease.
