Ajose’s Commonwealth title fight shifted
NIGERIA’S bid for a Commonwealth boxing title will have to be on hold for at least another two months after Ghanaian Isaac Quartey’s defeat in a local contest made him no longer tenable for the Commonwealth challenge, reports hotsportslive.com.
Hotsportslive.com learnt Thursday morning from Nigel Nwajiobi, organizer of the title fight between Nigeria’s Olusegun Ajose and Ghanaian Quartey, earlier scheduled for Abuja on December 6, that Quartey’s defeat by Lartei Lartey for the Ghanaian super welterweight title at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in Accra on Friday means the organizers would have to find a new opponent for Ajose.
“It means Quartey can no longer fight for the Commonwealth title. That provides us with the little problem of finding a new opponent for Ajose. I arrived in Nigeria from the United Kingdom on November 1 and all I have been doing is preparing for this fight, only for this to happen”, said Nwajiobi, who is based in London.
Ajose, a former Olympian, would have to wait till January to know if he would nick the Commonwealth belt, which would put him in a good position to bid for the world title. “We’ll now have to look at a new date in January, perhaps”, stated Nwajiobi.
Ajose has been terror in the light-welterweight division in England, where the fear of him is the beginning of wisdom for prospects.
