We’ll not
abandon Niger Delta to bandits-- Obasanjo
President Olusegun Obasanjo has assured the international community
and concerned Nigerians that the government would not abandon the
Niger Delta to bandits.
The president was speaking to the new Italian ambassador to Nigeria,
Mr. Massimo Baistrocchi, one of the three new ambassadors to
Nigeria, who presented their credentials at State House, yesterday.
He said “we will do as much as possible to save lives, but we will
not abandon the area to bandits”.
President Obasanjo said the Administration had used a combination of
“carrot and stick” to address issues in the Niger Delta, but added
that it would not tolerate lawlessness.
The President also assured the Italian ambassador that the reforms
had been accepted enough by majority of Nigerians, and was
entrenched through legislation to continue after May, 2007.
“After initial protests due to the inevitable pains, Nigerians have
realised the benefits of the reforms and we have put in place human
structures to continue, while legislation has been provided to keep
the reforms going”, he stated.<<more>>

Kano
Forum distributes N11.5 worth of materials

THIS year’s Kano Forum (Inuwar jama’ar Kano) has distributed materials worth
N11,485,604 made up of school furniture, textbooks, science equipment,
building materials, home management equipment and teaching aids.
Chairman Board of Trustees of the Forum, Alhaji Magaji Dambatta, made the
disclosure at the 12th distribution ceremony of educational support
materials to local institutions of learning in the state.
During a speech at the ceremony, held at Farm Centre, Kano, Thursday,
Dambatta emphasised that, in addition, “we are providing some specially
required equipment for special education school, Tudun Maliki.”
He said because of the peculiar problems of the Tudun Maliki school, the
forum has consistently being giving support materials to it, adding, “I
should emphasise that our contribution to this school is by no means
sufficient to meet its needs.”
“It is therefore important to invite stakeholders and philanthropists to
extend helping hand to the school as well as to many of our educational

Premier League kicks off January 6
The Nigeria Football League (NFL) board rose from its Annual General
Meeting (AGM) on Thursday at the Chida Hotel, Abuja to announce that
the 20062007 Premier League season will now commence on January 6.
The kick-off of the league had witnessed changes in date starting
from its initial kick-off date of November 25, then December 19
before this new date.
KICK OFF also learnt that the NFL congress unanimously endorsed MTN
as the league title sponsor, therefore foreclosing an attempt by
Globacom to continue to sponsor the league.
