Premier League kicks off
January 6
The Nigeria Football League (NFL) board rose from its Annual General Meeting
(AGM) on Thursday at the Chida Hotel, Abuja to announce that the 20062007
Premier League season will now commence on January 6.
The kick-off of the league had witnessed changes in date starting from its
initial kick-off date of November 25, then December 19 before this new date.
KICK OFF also learnt that the NFL congress unanimously endorsed MTN as the
league title sponsor, therefore foreclosing an attempt by Globacom to
continue to sponsor the league.
"We have unanimously endorsed MTN as the league title sponsor for the next
four years," Mike Idoko, NFL spokesman told KICK OFF.
NFL also disclosed that after advertising the bid for sponsorship of the
league in several national newspapers, only MTN applied and met the deadline
while Globacom did not meet up with the deadline.
"There will also be draws on the 19th and 20th of December for the
participating teams while another emergency meeting of the league board is
billed for December 19," Idoko disclosed.
The NFL Congress also approved the set up of a four-man committee which
would look into several aggrieved cases in the last season's league with a
view to come up with the ways of settling them finally.
The Acting Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA),
Fanny Amun will serve as the committee chairman while other members of the
committee are Ayo Bello, Kasali Obanoyen and Isaac Ibafidon, who will serve
as secretary.
