Sokoto govt bans pregnant women from 2007 hajj
The Sokoto state government has banned women with more than five-month old pregnancies from this year’s Hajj.
Dr Halliru Alhassan, the leader of the state’s 10-member medical team for the 2007 Hajj, announced the ban on Thursday.
He said the measure was informed by last year’s sad experience in which no fewer than 20 abortions were recorded during the Hajj by pregnant pilgrims from the state.
Alhassan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that although Islam did not prohibite pregnant women from performing Hajj, the ban became necessary due to the rigorous nature of the pilgrimage.
“The stress and rigours associated with the exercise may be injurious to the health of a pregnant woman and her baby,” he added.
He said the ban had been communicated to Hajj officials in the 23 local government councils in the state.
Alhassan said more than 3,000 intending pilgrims had been inoculated with polio, yellow fever and C.S.M vaccines.
