2007 polls:
Shekarau tasks politicians on campaign of calumny

KANO state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has enjoined
politicians to exhibit tolerance, fear of Allah and desist from
political rancour, intimidation and campaign of calumny for the
success of the forthcoming general elections.
The governor stated this in a broadcast to the Muslim Ummah as
part of state government’s celebrations to mark the commencement
of the new Islamic Calendar, 1428 after Hijrah of Prophet
Muhammad (P.B.U.H.)
Malam Shekarau described as ‘wrong’ the attitude of some
aspiring politicians who engage or encourage political thuggery,
blackmail and intimidation at this material time when the
government is implementing the Sharia legal system in its
totality.
He stated that the period of intimidation, fighting and
political thuggery is gone, warning that security agents will
not hesitate to deal with any politician who violates the
provisions of the constitution with regard to the conduct of the
forth coming elections.
Malam Shekarau also appealed to the people in the state to
contribute positively toward ensuring an Islamic displined and
self reliant state.
He revealed that his administration has electrified over 200
villages at the cost of over N1269 million, while a total of 100
A Daidaita Sahu motor vehicles in addition to 1500 tricycles
have been distributed to relevant bodies in order to boost
transportation system in the state.
According to the governor, “we tackled the environmental
degradation areas affected by flood, where major bridges,
culverts and drainages were constructed at Bulbula, Tudun
Murtala and Rimin Kebe areas”.
Meanwhile, Malam Shekarau has advised all eligible candidates to
ensure that they revalidate their voters’ cards to enable them
vote for competent and responsible leaders.
He further offered prayers for a prosperous and happy Islamic
new year.
Weekend Triumph recalls that at its inception in 2003, the state
government declared the 1st of Muharram a work-free day to
enable Muslim Ummah in the state celebrate the beginning of the
Islamic calendar. |
