15 survivors
of Abule Egba fire disaster die
Fifteen of the 60 survivors of the pipeline fire disaster at
Abule Egba, Lagos, have died.
This was confirmed by a correspondent of the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) who visited the intensive care units of the
hospitals where the victims were admitted.
He reported of the pains, anguish and stories of pity by the
remaining survivors.
The latest figure bring the casualty figure to 284 in addition
to the 269 burnt corpses recovered from the scene of disaster.
The 269 corpses had earlier been given mass burial on Tuesday.
At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital emergency ward,
25 of the survivors were being attended to, while some relations
were in around to render necessary assistance.
While some of the survivors said they could not recall how the
fire started, Mr Yomi Abudu, who had burns on his hands and
legs, said that he was invited to the scene by a friend.
``My friend Toun, told me that there was fuel at Abule Egba, so
we followed others to scoop because we thought we could make
some money just to feed,'' he said.
Mr Tunde Ade, who had a first-degree burns, said he was just
passing by when he discovered that he had been enveloped by
flames.
Dr Idowu Fadeyebi, a plastic surgeon, told NAN that the
condition of many of them was still critical, owing to the
amount of carbon monoxide they had inhaled, apart from the
various degrees of burns.
``When there is so much carbon monoxide in the system, it
obstructs the oxygen intake of a patient in a critical
condition,'' he added.
Fadeyebi, however, gave an assurance that the hospital was doing
every thing possible to fully restore their health. |
