AC says
Presidency’s suit on VP’s seat vindicates stand
The Action Congress (AC) said the presidency’s belated decision
to seek the Court of Appeal’s pronouncement on whether or not
Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s should lose his seat for moving
to another party has vindicated its (AC) stand that President
Olusegun Obasanjo lacks the power to sack his deputy.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, in Abuja Thursday, the party said it would have been
much better for the President to seek an unbiased legal opinion
on the issue before moving against his deputy the way he did.
“We have said repeatedly that the ruling PDP and the President
acted out of sync with the constitution by declaring vacant the
VP’s seat for leaving the PDP for our party,” AC said.
“Our stand, as well as that of most legal experts and ordinary
Nigerians, regarding the unconstitutionality of the President’s
action has now been vindicated by the presidency’s decision to
head to court,” the party said.
AC reiterated its earlier call on all Nigerians to be vigilant
so as to save the nation’s fledgling democracy, and expressed
its avowed commitment to efforts to enthrone a true democracy
based on respect for the constitution and the rule of law.
