Odili splashes millions on
Dolphins
The Rivers State Government on Thursday rewarded players of Coca-Cola FA Cup
champions Dolphins with a cash donation of N1million each.
In an elaborate ceremony held at the main bowl of the Alfred Diete Spiff
Civic Centre and graced by Traditional Rulers, the speaker of the State
House of Assembly and his legislators, the State executive council and Local
Government Chairmen, Governor Peter Odili also made a special cash donation
of N1.5 million to Technical Adviser Ifeanyi Onyedika and N1.2 million to
captain Victor Ezeji, as well as N5 million to the supporters club.
Before announcing the incentives, Odili praised the Port Harcourt team for
recovering from a poor start to end the season on a high.
"I must confess it has not been an easy ride for Dolphins," he said. "When
they played Bayelsa United in the opening match (of the league) to
commission our international synthetic turf, I left very early because they
were struggling.
"I told the Commissioner for Sports, Allwell Onyesoh, his job was on the
line because he had disgraced me before the CAF President and promised not
to risk watching them again until I hear they are doing well.
"Today, they have not only done well, but they have become the envy of
soccer in the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he added.
The Governor further announced the team would be sponsored abroad on a
week-long holiday and that two brand new air-conditioned buses would be made
available to them ahead of the new season.
Sharks Supporters Club also benefited from the largesse as they were given
N3million, while different levels of cash incentives were lavished on the
Rivers State contingent to the 2006 National Sports Festival.
